Halloween beloved holiday celebrated with costumes and spooky festivities, has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. It originated in Ireland during the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. While Halloween is not an official federal holiday in the united states.
it holds great significance for most Americans. Its roots trace back to the Celts in Ireland, who celebrated their Celtic New Year, or “Summers End,” on October 31.
This marked the transition into winter, and the Celts believed that the veil between worlds was thinnest during this time.

They celebrated with a three-day festival, which included administrative tasks like settling debts and taxes but also involved warding off malicious creatures called sidhs, believed to cross over and cause destruction during the night.
A huge commercial holiday around the world
As Halloween evolved over the years, it became a holiday characterized by spooky themes, costumes, and decorations. In the United States, it’s a massive commercial event, with an estimated annual spending of $6 billion, making it the second-largest commercial holiday after Christmas.

What day is Halloween this year?
Halloween in 2023 falls on Tuesday, October 31, with the weekend closest to the holiday known as “”Halloweekend,”,” taking place on October 28 and 29.
What does Halloween mean?
The term “Halloween” has Christian origins dating back to 1745. It is derived from “Hallowe’en,” meaning “Saints evening.” “Hallow” refers to saints, while “even” denotes “Eve” in the Scottish dialect, later shortened to “e’en” or “een.” Thus, “Hallow Even” became “Hallowe’en” and eventually “Halloween.”
Halloween is celebrated on the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day, commonly known as All Saints’ Day.
It’s a time for celebration and remembrance of the dead, characterized by various customs and traditions, from trick-or-treating to haunted houses and spooky decorations.
It has to be noted that Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos are distinct celebrations that take place around the same time, from October 31 to November 2.
Halloween is centered around the dark and eerie aspects of death, while Dia de Muertos is a Mexican tradition that celebrates the connection between the living and the dead, emphasizing life after death.

Halloween is followed by All Saints’ Day (for which it is the vigil) on November 1 and All Souls’ Day on November 2. Together the three days of remembrance of the dead form the triduum (a religious observance lasting three days) of Hallowtide. People traditionally visit the graves of deceased relatives during this time. It is related to the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead.
