What’s the most money you’ve ever on a meal? Was it worth it?

A few years ago, while in Tokyo, I splurged on a meal at Sukiyabashi Jiro—the famous sushi spot from Jiro Dreams of Sushi. It cost about $300 for the omakase menu. No menus, no choices—just Jiro’s son crafting one perfect piece after another at lightning speed.

Was It Worth It?

Yes, in many ways:

  • The craftsmanship was stunning. Every bite was precise, balanced, unforgettable.
  • For a sushi lover, it felt like a pilgrimage—part meal, part performance.
  • It’s a unique memory I still talk about.

But also, not entirely:

  • You’re in and out in under an hour.
  • I’ve had equally joyful (and much cheaper) sushi elsewhere.
  • The hype can mess with your expectations.

In the end, it was about more than just food—it was about the story, the experience, and the chance to taste true mastery.

Sometimes the best meals aren’t the most expensive—but they are the most memorable.
